329

This LBSCR numberplate is from one of the magnificent LBSCR (London Brighton South Coast Railway) baltic tanks. Number 329 was built at Brighton Works in October 1921 but was rebuilt at Eastleigh Works in 121934 to the 4-6-0 wheel arrangement, class N15X This was no reflection on the original design but rather due to the fact that after the main Brighton lines had been electrified in 1933 there was no further work for the big tank engines. 329 eventually became British Railways number 32329 and was named Stephenson. It was withdrawn from service on the 8th of July 1956 from Basingstoke shed and cut up at Brighton Works later that month. The last of the class of seven locomotives, number 32331 Beattie, was withdrawn in June 1957.
